The species is a native of China. In India it is cultivated throughout the plains and in hilly areas of Himalayas upto an elevation of 3,300 meters (Wealth of India. 1962), covering nearly 280,000 ha area (Sanchez, 2000). It has been exploited commercially in sericulture industry as the foliage form the chief food source of silk worm (Wakhlu and Bhau, 2000).
