Description |
There are approximately 500 living species of conifers out of 20,000 or so known seed plants. However, conifers play a role quite out of proportion to their number. Roughly, one third of the earth is land, one third of land is covered with trees and one third of these are the conifers (de Wit, 1966). Economically also conifers account for half cash value of annual timber crop and for three quarters of the actual number of tree marketed as timber.
