Description Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Miller) is one of the most popular and widely grown vegetables in the world ranking second in importance to potato in many countries. In India it occupies an area of 350 thousand hectares with a production of 5300 thousand million tons (Anonymous, 1998). It plays an important role in the economy of the farmers of Himachal Pradesh since it is grown in about 2,570 hectares with a production of about 79,057 tons (Anonymous 1995-96). The agroclimatic conditions of Himachal Pradesh are ideally suited for the production of tomato as an off season vegetable crop since the fruits are available in the market at such a time (June to October) when it does not grow in the plains due to the unfavourable high temperature.
