Description Stone fruits belonging to the family Rosaceae (sub family: Prunoideae) include several important crops such as peach, plum, apricot, cherries, nectarines etc. and are grown in different parts of the world. Among these, apricots are grown extensively in USA, Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Morocco, Iran, Africa and Australia. In India, apricots are grown in Jammu&Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, sub mountainous tracts of Punjab, Uttranchal, North-Eastern states and to a limited extent in the Nilgiris. India produced 10,000 metric tonnes of apricots against the world production of 2.64 million tonnes (FAO 2005). In Himachal Pradesh, total production of apricots has been reported to be 1450 metric tonnes from an area of 423 hectares (Anonymous, 2005). Besides, approximately 3280 metric tonnes of production of wild apricots has also been estimated in Himachal Pradesh annually (Gupta, 2006). Owing to their perishable nature, the apricot fruits are sold as fresh and part of the produce is dried or processed in to pulp for making various products such as squashes, appetizers and jams. After processing, the stones are thrown as a waste leading to environmental pollution. However, the kernels from these stones possess a tremendous potential as a source of oil for various edible and pharmaceutical purposes. Thus on the basis of recovery of stones (12.5% in cultivated and 16.5% in wild apricots), the availability of stones/pits from cultivated and wild apricots is estimated to be 1791.2 metric tonnes in India and 722 metric tonnes in Himachal Pradesh. Out of these stones, the kernel recovery (31.9-32.1%) is expected to be 572.5 metric tonnes in India and 231.5 metric tonnes in Himachal Pradesh. From these kernels the oil yield (46.1-47.2%)) is estimated to be 268.3 metric tonnes in India. Thus, there exists a good potential for utilization of stones/pits of cultivated and wild apricots for production of apricot kernel oil, which can be utilized for various purposes, viz. edible, pharmaceutical as well as in cosmetic preparations (Gupta, 2006).
