Description |
Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) is one of the most important fruit crops and is reported to have originated in the temperate region of western Asia. The genus Malus belongs to the subfamily Pomoidae and the family Rosaceae. The commercial cultivation of apple in India is largely confined to the north-western Himalayan states of J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal, whereas, north-eastern states comprising Sikkim, Anmachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Assam have a meagre share of less than one per cent in the total apple production.
