Description |
South Eastern United States but has a world-wide naturalized range (Harlow et al., 1974). In India, Robinia plantations were introduced around 1890 in the mid hill zones of North Western Himalayas (Troup, 1921) between an altitudinal range of 1000-2000 m (Muthoo and Kango, 1965). The genus Robinia embodies twenty species of which Robinia pseudoacacia is the only economic tree globally adopted as a nitrogen fixing multipurpose tree (Gombu, 1972). Currently black locust is one of the most widely planted broad leaf species in the world, equally ranked with Populus and second to Eucalyptus in total hectares established (Kereszteski, 1981). Among its various uses, its utility as fuel wood, fodder with high crude protein, calcium and phosphorus (Brewbaker, 1986), soil conservation and antierosion properties are few.
