Description |
Rice is a staple food of about half of the world's population. In India, it is grown in an area of 44.5 million hectares with a production of 131.9 million tonnes (Anonymous, 2001). In Himachal Pradesh, it is an important Kharif crop next only to maize and is grown in an area of 88.8 thousand hectares with a production of 124.8 thousand tonnes (Anonymous, 2002). It is grown under varied agro-climatic conditions ranging from foot hills (350 m amsl) to high hills (2300 m amsl), covering sub-tropical to temperate conditions through the transitional zone of sub-temperate and humid conditions.
