Description |
Wild pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) belonging to family Punicaceae is multipurpose, fast growing cash crop tree found in the warm valleys and mid hill zone of the Western Himalayas between 900-1800 m and is cultivated throughout India (Wealth of India, 1982). It is subtropical fruit tree, grows best in semi arid climate, where cool winters and hot summers prevail and is injured only when temperature goes extremely low. Although the tree is considered to be a native of Iran, Afghanistan and Baluchistan, forms vast patches in open dry slopes of Mandi, Kangra, Sirmour, Bilaspur, Chamba, Kullu, Shimla and Solan districts of Himachal Pradesh (Pant, 1995; Kumar, 2005).
