Description |
The genus chrysanthemum belongs to family Asteraceae, which comprises over 160 species of annuals, herhaceous perennials and suhshruhs. The Florist's chrysanthemum is an outbreeding polyploid with a variable somatic chromosome number. It is usually considered to be a hexaploid, 2n = 6x = 54 (Langton, 1980). However the precise pattern of inheritance in the species is not clear. Florists' or greenhouse chrysanthemum is believed to be a complex hybrid species evolved as a result of centuries of cross pollination between the elemental species Chrysanthemum indicum, C. morifohum, C. japonicum, C. ornatum and others (Nazeer and Khushoo, 1982).
