Description The live stock rearing is an integral part of rural living system in Himachal Pradesh, having live stock population of 5.26 million (Anon 1998). The main sources of fodder in this region are natural grasslands, meadows, forestlands, crop residues, waste lands, orchards & fodder from cultivated lands, field bunds, weeds from fields. However, these sources are insufficient to meet the forage demand of even 50% of the existing livestock population. In one of the estimates, it was found that Himachal Pradesh has a shortage to the tune of 54.10% and 38.2% in respect of green and dry fodder, respectively (Sood,1998).
