Description |
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is one of the most important, popular and widely grown vegetables in the world. It is grown extensively in tropical, subtropical and temperate areas and is also the most leading crop under protected cultivation. It occupies an area of about 3,644 and 365 thousand hectares with annual production of 98,622 and 5,500 thousand tonnes in the world and India, respectively (FAO, 2000). Its fruits are used in various culinary preparations, salad, soup, sauce, ketchup, preserve, paste, puree and powder. Tomato fruits contain appreciable quantities of Vitamins A and C and its pulp and juice are promoter of gastric secretions and blood purifier (Tiwari and Choudhury, 1993).
