Description |
Numerous Arthropod pests have been known to attack fruit crops. Among these, titles belonging to class Arachnida are cosmopolitan with wide host range. The mites are characterized by presence of four pairs of legs and unsegmented abdomen (Krantz, 1978). Mites play an important role in agricultural and horticultural production. The number of plant feeding mites was only 35 in 1964 (Ghai, 1964), which has now risen to over 600 species (Gupta, 1985; ChannaBasavana et al., 1988) in Indian subcontinent. Of the several groups of mites only four families viz. Tetranychidae (spider mites), lenuipalpidae (false spider mites), Eriophyidae (gall forming mites) and Tarsonemidae saprophytic mites) are economically important. Among these, tetranychid mites are important pests of fruit trees in the world. The earliest record of the tetranychid mite in india is that of red spider mite on tea in Assam (Peal, 1868). Ghai (1964) reported 20 letranychid mites in India, while, Manson (1963) reported several tetranychid mites associated with citrus in India. Prasad (1974) recorded 40 species of Tetranychoidea in india.
