Description Himachal Pradesh the "fruit bowl" of India is situated between 30deg22" to 33deg12" North latitude and 75deg47" to 79deg4" East longitude with its altitude varying from 350 to 7000 m above mean sea level. The agroclimatic conditions of the state are well suited for the production of various types of temperate fruits (apple, pear, peach, pecan nut, walnut, almond, cherry etc.) to subtropical fruits (citrus, mango, litchi, guava, grapes etc.). Temperate fruits occupy an area of more than 1.10x105 ha with an annual production of 0.3 million tonnes. Apple alone occupies nearly 67 per cent area and contributes 82 per cent of the total fruit production (Anonymous, 1998). In India, the total area under fruit crops was 3.8xl06 ha with the production of 4.55xl07 MT during the year 1999-2000. Apple alone occupied 2.4x105 ha contributing 1.05x106 MT to the total fruit production (Anonymous, 2001). In Himachal Pradesh the area and production of fruit crops during the year 1999-2000 was 1.965x105 ha and 8.75x104 MT, respectively. Apple occupied an area of 8.9xl04 ha with the production of 4.9x104 MT, according to the above report.
