Description |
The common yew (Taxus spp.) is a gymnosperm without cones. It is distinguished from other conifers by the peltate microsporophylls and the embedment of seeds in a fertile scale called the arillus. This is not a primitive genus. The apparent simple reproductive elements suggest that they are evolutionarily more developed than other conifers (Florin, 1948). This genus is distributed widely in the moist temperate regions of Europe, Russia, Korea, Japan and China, Himalayan ranges in India and Burma, Vietnam, Phillipines in Asia, southeast Alaska to California, southeast Canada to northeastern USA, Florida, Mexico, Guatemala and El-Salvador in North America. (Fig. 1) (Krussmann, 1985). There are around 10 known species in the genus Taxus (Appendino, 1993). They were all treated by Pilger as subspecies of Taxus baccata. But the vast ecological amplitude displayed by the various described species suggests that they may be true species and are different from each other. Zuccarin named the Himalayan yew .as Taxus wallichiana. De Laubenfels (1988) considered Asian yew as a single species where as Farjon (1998) claimed that there are five species of Taxus in Asia i.e. Taxus chinensis, T. wallichiana, T. cuspidata, T. fauna and T. sumatrana.
