Description Acacia catechu Willd. belongs to family Mimosoideae and the genus Acacia comprises over 500 species. These species are most abundant in Australia and Africa but are also found in other warmer and drier parts of old and new world. These are mostly thorny trees or shrubs but a few are climbers. In India also, the genera is well represented by 22 indigenous species (Troup, 1921). In addition, six introduced species which are most common as exotics, of this genera are Acacia mearnsii, A. decurrens, A. dealbata, A. melanoxylon, A. pycantha and A. auriculiformis. Indian species of the genera are essentially xerophytic in nature and are chiefly distributed throughout the Indian plains.
