Description |
Strawberry is one of the most important soft fruits of the world. The cultivated strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa), also known as pineapple strawberry, is a result of chance hybridization of two American species F. chiloensis (scarlet strawberry) and F. virginiana (Frutilla) (Duchesne, 1766) and belongs to family Rosaceae. This fruit may be found in the markets from the tropics to the polar zones in both hemispheres. It is cultivated in plains as well as in hills up to an elevation of 3000 m amsl in humid and dry regions (Darrow and Waldo, 1934). Presently, the total area under its cultivation is about 221,556 ha with an annual production of 3,110,186 metric tonnes (FAO, 2000).
