Description |
One of the major challenges that man must have faced during evolution is the threat of diseases. However, the probing nature of man has made him understand the art of using the surrounding nature especially life forms. The first major step in this direction was identification of useful species or group of species in treating diseases. However, his probing nature did not stop him further in identifying the components within that selected species responsible for its usefulness in treating diseases. Helped by modern analytical tools, this has led to the discovery of numerous plant bio-molecules with targeted action in treating specific diseases. Many examples in this regard can be cited e.g. taxol from Taxus baccata, morphine and codeine from Papaver somniferum, digoxin and its related cardiac glycosides from Digitalis species, quinine and its derivatives from Cinchona ledgeriana, colchicine from Gloriosa superba and Colchicum luteum, vinblastine and vincristine from Catharanthus roseus, reserpine from Rauwolfia serpentina (Sarpgandha), emetine from Ipecac, ephedrine from Ephedra, spilanthol from Spilanthes acmella, atropine and its related alkaloids from. Atropa, etoposide and tenuposide from Podophyllum hexandrum, solasodine from Solanum species etc. (Chopra et al., 1956; Anonymous, 1976; Rastogi and Mehrotra, 1991).
