Description |
The world population today is about 6 billion and if it continues to increase at a current rate of 1.5 per cent per annum, the population will double before the year 2100. Such an exponential increase in population shall not only deplete our natural resource base but also cause several environmental disorders. Many of the developing countries are today already encountered in particular with the dwindling supply of food and wood besides, land degradation problems. We are currently facing a huge wood deficit and which is likely to increase many fold when consumption of wood on the global basis reaches 7 billion m3 per annum by the end of 21st century as against the 3.5 billion m3 in 1992 (World Resource Institute, 1992; South, 1999). This quantum of wood will come from an increase in harvest of natural stands and/or from plantations. The amount of wood that is harvested from natural stands in future will depend directly on the amount of plantations we establish today.
