Description Occurrence of biliary calculi or gallstones has remained the most prevalent disorder affecting the biliary system ever since the ancient times. The fact is authenticated by the autopsies of Egyptian and Chinese mummies establishing gallbladder stones to have existed for more than 35 centuries. A couple of decades ago it was regarded as a disease confined to the western hemisphere only, however, of late the incidence of its occurrence has assumed alarming magnitude in this part of the world as well. Possibly gradual shift in the diet and lifestyle in combination with changing socio-cultural pattern of the Asian society are some of the contributory factors.
