Description |
Past few decades has witnessed the exploition of forests for their natural resources to such an extent that it attracted maximum attention of Governments as well as educational institutions for their protection throughout the world. Man has greatly influenced habitat productivity intentionally through agriculture & horticulture and unintentionally through variety of cultivation practices, construction of roads, hydroelectric projects, colonization and industrialization. There has been drastic increase in the demand for fodder, fuel wood and other forest products and the situation is expected to get further deteriorated resulting in the exploitation of natural resources at a menacing rate. In India, the forest area is unevenly distributed and the production is low being only one fourth to the world's average. The figures on the percentage of forest area subjected to degradation is also underestimated. Even by the most conservative estimates atleast 50 per cent of the reserved forests, 80 per cent of the protected forests and almost whole of the unclassed forests can be taken as degraded forests.
