Description |
The kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa A. Chev.) is a deciduous vine native to mountainous region of Central and South - Western China. Kiwifruit is the most recent fruit crop being successfully grown and marketed in the world. The fruit was introduced into New Zealand and Europe in the early 20th century and its commercial production began in 1930 in New Zealand and in 1970 in Europe (Ferguson, 1990). New Zealand was the first country to cultivate the kiwifruit on a commercial scale. At present in the world kiwifruit is cultivated on 54,743 ha with the production of 1,004,537 MT and New Zealand being the largest producer (265,000 MT) accounting for 26.38 per cent of the world production (Anon., 2001). Besides New Zealand, this fruit is being cultivated on a large scale in USA, Italy, Japan, France, Belgium, Germany, South Africa and Australia.
