Description |
The Himalaya is the home of Indian pines and constitute one of the most divergent and economically important group of species which provide valuable natural resources and contribute significantly to the local and industrial economy of the country. It also protect the watersheds which sustains and regulates the water supply for the need of millions that inhabit Himalayan river basins. Pinus roxburghii Sargent commonly known as chir pine is one of the most important pine species of India covering an area of 6728 sq km. Its distribution extends longitudinally from 71° to 93°E and latitudinally from 26° to 36°N. As per altitudinal limits in India, it grows between 450 to 2300 m but the best forests of the species lies between 650 to 1500 m above mean sea level. Its distribution in India is confined to Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir (158813 ha), Himachal Pradesh (127600 ha), Uttar Pradesh (412000 ha), Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Punjab and Manipur (Lohani, 1985). In Himachal Pradesh, 6 per cent area of total forest area is covered by chirpine alone (Anonymous, 1985).
