Description Livestock rearing is an integral part of living pattern in the country where more than two-third of population depends upon agriculture and inhabites in rural areas. Though India has vast animal population which accounts for more than 15 per cent of world livestock, the low productivity is a matter of concern. Presently, the country has about 490 million animals that feed on permanent pastures of 12 million hectares (Anonymous, 1999). About 90 per cent of livestock in hilly tracts of the country subsists primarily on natural grasslands, pastures including forests and wastelands etc. for their forage needs. By and large, the condition of these resources is very poor because of overgrazing, prevalence of unproductive grass species and overall poor management practices (Lal, 1990).
