Description |
Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) is one of the most important fruit crops grown throughout the temperate region of both the Northern and Southern hemisphere at latitudes North and South of 35 degrees, respectively. In India, it is commercially cultivated in North-Western Himalayan States of J&K, H.P., Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in an area of 2,52,000 ha with an annual production of 14,78,000 MT (FAO, 2006). However, in Himachal Pradesh, it is cultivated over an area of about 88,560 ha with an annual production of 5,40,356 MT (Anonymous, 2005). With the increase in area under apple cultivation every year in the country, the demand for planting material of apple within and outside the State is also increasing considerably.
