Among vegetable crops, tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) enjoys a world-wide patronage ranking second in importance to potato in many countries (Tiwari and Choudhary, 1993). It occupies an area of 3,167 thousand hectares with an annual production of 88,222 thousand metric tonnes in the world, whereas in India, the area under tomato cultivation is 350 thousand hectares and the annual production is about 5,300 thousand metric tonnes (FAO, 1997).
