Description Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) is the major temperate fruit of the world and has become the pride of hilly tracts of northern India. Apple is extensively grown in C.I.S. (erstwhile U.S.S.R.), U.S.A., China, France, Italy, Turkey, Argentina, West Germany, Spain, and Japan. As far as the production is concerned, it ranks first among the temperate fruits, touching 48,155 thousand tonnes in 1994 (Anon., 1995). In India apple cultivation has attained sizeable dimensions in the past decades and production has increased manifold from 1,000 thousand tonnes in 1985 to 1,238 thousand tonnes in 1994 (Anon., 1985, 1995). In Himachal Pradesh apple occupies an area of 72,406 hectares with an annual production of 294.73 thousand tonnes (Anon., 1994).
