Bread vheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell.), on account of its wide adaptation to various agroclimatic conditions, occupies the top position among the cereal crops in the world both in area and production. During 1995, it vas planted to 222 million hectares and total production vas 560 million tonnes (cf Khush and Baenziger, 1996). It is the leading grain crop of the temperate climate of the vorld just as rice is the leading grain crop in the tropics.
