Description |
Brinjal (Solatium nelongena L.) belonging to family Solanaceae, is one of the most common vegetables grown all the year round in the country. India is considered to be the centre of its origin (Zeven and Zhukovsky, 1875). Many varieties of brinjal are grown throughout India which differ in shape, size and colour of the fruit. It is a rich source of vitamins and has got ayurvedic medicinal properties. It is quite high in nutritive value and can be well compared with tomato (Choudhury, 1979). It is grown commercially as a market crop, especially in low and mid-hill areas of Himachal Pradesh. Brinjal is grown for its immature, unripe fruits which are used in a variety of ways as cooked vegetable and in curries.
