Description |
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. ) is an important vegetable belonging to family cucurbitaceae. According to Ramchandran and Seshadri (1986), on the basis of cytological analysis, cucumber has evolved in Asia. It is native of South Eastern Himalayan region. It is extensively grown in tropical and sub-tropical parts of the country. Cucumber is cultivated world-wide with estimated area of 880 thousand hectares and annual production of 12714 thousand metric tonnes (FAO, 1989). In India, cucumber is cultivated in an area of 16288 hectares with a total annual production of 1,05,690 tonnes (Gill and Tomar, 1991), whereas in Himachal Pradesh it is grown in an area of 2500 hectares with a production of 35,000 tonnes. It is used as salad as well as for pickling purpose. It is also being used in cosmetic industry.
