Description |
Cauliflower, Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis L. is an important vegetable of the family Cruciferae. In Himanchal Pradesh, it is grown in mid and high hills in 645 hectares with total production of 11,691 tonnes (Anon., 1996). The insect pests that are harmful to cauliflower in the world are numerous, but in Himachal Pradesh major insect pests reported to inflict serious damage to cole crops are cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae L. , cabbage white butterfly, Pieris brassicae L., diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L., and painted bug, Bagrada crucifrum Kirkaldy (Dhaliwal and Goma, 1979). Bhalla (1990) and Barwal (1997) categorised B. brassicae as key pest of cabbage and cauliflower in Himachal Pradesh with P. brassicae and P. xylostella as major and minor/moderate insect pests, respectively. The damage caused by the insect pests affects cauliflower crop both qualitatively and quantitatively resulting in low returns to the farmers.
