Description |
Potato, Solanum tuberosum (L.) is an important food crop of the world since centuries. It is amongst the most cherished foods and in respect of production, it ranks fourth in world and third in India (Shekhawat, 2001). It gives highest production interms of nutrients and edible biomass amongst the four major food crops i.e. wheat, rice, maize and potato (Khurana and Rana, 2003). India produces 22.2 million tones of potato in an area of 1.28 million hectares whereas in Himachal Pradesh, the production is about 140 thousand tones from an area of 16.2 thousand hectares (Anon., 2003a). Thus, potato plays a decisive role in the economy of the state as well of the country.
