Description |
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell) is one of the most widely cultivated cereal crops and serves as the main source of food for mankind. In India during the year, 1994-95 wheat was grown in an area of 25.53 million ha with a production of 65.47 million tonnes. In Himachal Pradesh, during the same year wheat occupied an area of 386 thousand ha with production being 595 thousand tonnes (Anonymous, 1996). There has been a significant increase in the production of bread wheat has been achieved after the advent of semi-dwarf varieties and further increase in productivity seems to be rather difficult. This warrants the need of adopting new breeding approaches which might increase the yield potential of the presently available wheat cultivars. Moreover, the increase in wheat yield achieved during the recent years has been associated with an overall fall in grain quality. So there is great necessity for improving the quality character like protein, 'Which will not only help in improving the nutritional level but also in producing better products.
