Description |
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is one of the most important solanaceous vegetable crops grown worldwide under outdoor and indoor conditions. It originated in central and South America (Vavilov, 1951) and probably introduced into India by Portuguese. Tomato is a nutritionally valuable crop as almost a day's requirement of calcium is present in a medium sized tomato and protein content is same as that of mother's milk. Furthermore, lycopene has been found the most powerful antioxidant which helps to keep cholesterol down and bolster resistance to cancer (Watzman, 2000).
