Description |
Rose (Rosa hybrida L.), the top ranking cut flower of today, belonging to the family rosaceae, originated in northern hemisphere and was brought to India by Babar in the year 1526. Since then, it has been a garden adornment in our country and its commercial cultivation as a cut flower in greenhouses started during 1992. The global trade of cut flowers is estimated to be about Rs. 75,000 crores per annum (Vijaya Bhaskar, 2004) out of which, rose accounts for 19 per cent (Gajanana, 2004). Nancy Laws (2002) reported that in the year 2000, United States imported cut flowers worth 770 million US $, out of which 12.53 million US $ accounted for rose only.
