Description |
The sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is one of the most popular fruit crops with consumers, albeit often one of the most expensive. Its popularity is considered surprising by some connoisseurs of fruits, in that it is not the sweetest, the most flavoursome or that largest of the fruits and much of each fruit is composed of an inedible stone. Nevertheless, sweet cherries have, for several hundred years epitomized luxury and decadence. The fruits are undoubtedly attractive in appearance on account of their bright shiny skin colour and subtle flavour, and sweetness is obviously of great appeal to the most of consumers of the fruits.
