Description |
Wheat (Triticum aestivum) constitutes a major part of cereals grain production and forms a staple. food of the habitants of northern India. It ranks second after rice from production point of view and contributes about 32 per cent to the total food grain production in the country. In India the crop is being grown on an area of 25.15 million hectares with annual grain production of 62.62 million tonnes (Anonymous, 1996). In Himachal Pradesh wheat ranks first in acreage and covers 374.9 thousand hectares with production of 609.3 thousand tonnes. The average yield of wheat in the state is 16.25 q/ha against the average yield of 24.93 q/ha in India (Anonymous, 1996). Apart from other management factors, severe infestation of weeds forms a negative factor in wheat production and is responsible for marked losses in crop yields, Mani et al. (1968) and Sharma, (1988) reported that on an average weeds caused (6.30 38.4 %) and 53 per cent reduction in grain yield of wheat in India and Palampur, respectively.
