Description The temperate fruit industry of Himachal Pradesh is confronted with the problems of low productivity and poor quality of produce. Among the various factors attributed to be associated with these problems are the use of untrue-to-type, low grade and poor quality planting material for the establishment of orchards. The failure of varieties to come true-to-type is one of the serious difficulties encountered by orchardists and is the one that seems to be on the increase. As the ultimate success in fruit growing depends upon the quality of plant material used for establishing the orchard, the nursery plants are said to be the foundations, around which the orchards are built. In order to improve productivity, the use of true-to-type and quality nursery planting material is prerequisite for the success of an orcharding enterprise.
