Description |
Rice, Oryza sativa Linn, is cultivated over an area of 1,55,128 thousand hectares with a production of 5,96,485 thousand metric tonnes in the world. In India, it is being cultivated in about 43 million hectares with a total production of 1,31,200 metric tonnes. The rice crop in India, accounts for about 31 per cent of the total area under food grains (Anonymous, 2001a). It forms roughly 46 per cent of total output of the cereals and 41 per cent of India's output of grains. The current average yield in kg ha-1 is about 2929 that is very less as compared to other Asian countries like, Korea 6868, Japan 6414, China 6321, Turkey 5283, Indonesia 4261, Iran 4182 and Vietnam 4105 (Anonymous, 2001b).
