Description Sea buckthorn (Hippophae sp.) belonging to family Elaegnaceae grows extensively in cold desert areas of Hindu Kush Himalayas as a soil binding shrub and its cultivation is further encouraged as an afforestation plant. It is reported to be the only shrub which can withstand adverse climatic conditions (-43deg to +40degC) of cold deserts (Li and Schroeder, 1996). It occurs as a native plant in many temperate zones of the world (27deg-69degN latitude, 7degW and 122degE longitude) including Asia and Europe (Rousi, 1971). In India, sea buckthorn grows wild at higher altitudes (2500-4300 m amsl) in many parts of Lahaul Spiti, Chamba and Kinnaur districts of Himachal Pradesh, Leh and Ladakh regions of Jammu and Kashmir besides Sikkim (Singh, 1998).
