Description |
Amongst the problems that require immediate attention in India are those of energy and environment. As far as the rural scenario of India is concerned, the two are immediately inter-linked, because of environmental degradation which is to a large extent the result of utilization of biomass for domestic energy consumption. In fact over 50 per cent of the fuel is consumed in India for cooking (Anonymous,1980) . Wood is the principal source of fuel accounting for 68.5 per cent of the country's requirement. The firewood demand is presently about 125 m t per annum. It is expected to rise to about 350 to 375 m t by the end of the century (Patel, 1987) . The demand of wood for fuel and as the raw material in industry has been responsible for the large scale deforestation that the country has witnessed.
