Description |
Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) is one of the important cut flower crops which ranks 8th in World flower market (Flower Council of Holland, 2002). Large array of colours and excellent flower keeping quality has made it one of the most demanded flower in the World. The crop grown in open field is exposed to vivid environmental conditions and attack of insect-pest; resulting in poor quality flower production. To overcome these problems, greenhouses provide the plant with optimal conditions of light, temperature, humidity etc. for proper growth and to achieve the maximum yield of quality flowers. Although, carnations can be grown on a wide variety of soil, but its shallow and fibrous root system is sensitive to water logging and prone to attack by diseases such as fusarium root rot and wilt due to lack of aeration.
