Description |
Bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) also known as Sweet pepper or Spanish pepper is an important vegetable used in various delicacies and salads, the world over. The crop originated in New World tropics and subtropics (Greenleaf, 1986), and introduced in India by the British. Because of its excellent quality as obtained under Shimla hills conditions, it came to be called as 'Shimla Mirch'. Due to the advent of hybrids and change in food habits large quantities of bell peppers are now also grown in other states such as J&K, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Karnatka, Tamil Nadu, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. According to Singh and Sharma (1995), bell pepper has a good export potential.
