Description |
Novel genetic variability vis-a-vis the existing one has ever remained the cherished goal of plant breeders to complement and supplement quick varietal improvement of crop plants in breeding programmes. This has been facilitated with the advent of induced mutation techniques in addition to the standard hybridization. Historical discoveries of Muller (1927) in Drosophila and Stadler (1928) in barley and maize, that mutation can be induced artificially became the cornerstone of breeding activities in the following years for the development of crop varieties with novel traits and thus enriching germplasm base, specifically of crops important to agriculture. The account of mutation breeding studies in various crop plants for their applied values have been reviewed by Chopra (2005) in India and Ahloowalia ef al. (2004) in the world. Mutation is the fundamental principle leading to wide range of variation in accruing genotypes.
