Description |
Forests constitute a vital asset of a country and render substantial contribution towards the socio-economic development of its people by furnishing goods and services. Myriads of non-traditional products, besides wood and timber, are made available to ruralites by this natural asset. However, effective forest cover in India is already perilously low, nearly 19.27 per cent against 80 per cent around 3000 B.C. Also, targets of our National Forest Policy (1952) to have 33 pen cent of the geographical area under tree cover have remained unaccomplished so far. Instead, forest cover in the country continues to erode incessantly at an alarming rate of 1.5 m ha per year making the situation more grim. Growing stock of 4740 million m3 with average volume of 74.42 m3 per hectare is also far behind the world's average of 110 per hectare. Total annual increment of growing stock is estimated to be at 87.62 million m3 which, too, seems to be paltry (Anonymous, 1997). Per capita availability of forest cover in India is 0.07 ha against the world average of 1.0 ha.
