Description Amongst the problems that require immediate attention in India are those of energy and environment. As far as the rural scenario of India is concerned, the two are immediately inter-linked, because of environmental degradation which is to a large extent the result of utilization of biomass for domestic energy consumption. In fact over 50 per cent of the fuel is consumed in India for cooking (Anonymous, 1980). Wood is the principal source of fuel accounting for 68.5 per cent of the country's requirement. The firewood demand is presently about 125 m t per annum. It is expected to rise to about 350 to 375 m t by the end of the century (Patel, 1987). The demand of wood for fuel and as the raw material in industry has been responsible for the large scale deforestation that the country has witnessed.
