Pinus roxburghii Sargent commonly known as chir pine being a pioneer species has a remarkable adaptation to most sites in its zone of distribution. This capacity of the species to grow on difficult sites has attracted its extensive use in afforestation programmes. Once the forest cover of the species has become established, more valuable broad-leaved species can be introduced or will invade naturally (Shakya and Thompson 1987).
