India is one of those countries where the increasing pressure of population has started showing impact on its economy and natural resources. The growing demand for space and cultivation is encroaching upon the forest-land, consequently the forests are shrinking. Besides, demand for wood is increasing day by day. To meet the increasing demands for forest produce and to bridge the widening gulf between supply and demand, it is necessary to augment yield. A country starved of the wood has to depend on either import of the wood or has to develop its own resources for meeting the shortfall of wood.
