Description |
Hippophae rhamnoides L. commonly known as seabuckthom is a multipurpose plant species belonging to the genus Hippophae and family Elaeagnaceae, which includes six species and twelve subspecies all over the world (Ruan and Xie, 2001). Seabuckthom grows naturally in Russia, Britain, Germany, Finland, Romania, France, Central Asia, China, Nepal, Pakistan, India and Bhutan. In India, seabuckthorn grows in high altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttranchal. In Himachal Pradesh, seabuckthom grows on riversides and sunfacing slopes of Lahaul and Spiti, parts of Chamba, Kinnaur, Kullu and Shimla districts. Lahaul-Spiti has very rich resources of seabuckthorn at 2500-4300 m above mean sea level (Singh, 1998). Seabuckthorn is highly adaptable to varying and extreme conditions. The plant species has wide temperature range of -43degC to 40degC (Lu, 1992) and is hydrophilous plant in nature as it thrives well on riverbanks, valleys and shady slopes and about 600-700 mm of annual moisture appears to be suitable.
