Description |
Oilseeds constitute the second major agricultural crop in the country next to food grains in terms of tonnage and value. In India, the major oilseed crops occupy more than 17 million hectares which is roughly 10 per cent of the total cultivated area in the country out of which less than half of the area is irrigated while in the rest of the area, these crops are relegated to marginal and sub-marginal lands, as a result, the annual oilseed production is fluctuating and overall production is quite insufficient to meet out domestic requirements, thus resulting in a wide gap between the demand and the supply of edible oils. To abridge this gap, there is an urgent need for a concerted effort for increasing the production of edible oils by exploiting the genetic variability present in different oileiferous crops.
