Description |
Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) is an attractive, delicious fruit and widely acclaimed for its characteristic aroma, nutritious and refreshing quality. It belongs to the family Rosaceae and had originated from chance crossing of North American species, F. virginiana (L.) Duch and the Chilean species, F. chiloensis. All the strawberry cultivars are octaploid (2n = 56) and have been evolved artificially by man through hybridization (Darrow, 1949).
